For the first time in the history of the sport, women were able to defend the colors of their countries in an international competition. Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Peru, were the teams represented in the Intercontinental Cup, which was held in Curitiba, between December 8 and 10. With 100% of use, Brazil was crowned champion.
The match was held in a knockout tournament. In the first round Brazil had no difficulty in eliminating the Chileans. Led by striker Adriana Quadros, the hosts took 6-1 in their rivals and advanced to the final. On the other side, Peru and Mexico made a balanced duel. After a 2-2 draw in the normal time, Mexican goalkeeper Judith Diaz closed the goal in the shoot-outs and secured the country in the decision.
In the dispute for gold, Brazil had the support of the fans that stirred the Tarumã Gym. However, the first one that rocked the net was Mexico. Victoria put the team ahead. Still in the first half Maria Thereza tied for Brazil. In the second stage, Samira and Bruninha turned the game and secured the title for the Brazilian team. In the dispute for the third place, Peru defeated Chile by 1 to 0.
